The Alchemist Forge partners with Shieldhill Castle to display unique handcrafted jewellery

We are thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase some of the stunning pieces created by The Alchemist Forge. Sam Glendinning, Owner of The Alchemist Forge has partnered up with Shieldhill Castle to provide handcrafted one of a kind jewellery, to not only be exhibited but also available for purchase. Next time you visit Shieldhill Castle check out our Alchemist Forge display, even take a piece home with you. In light of working with Sam we thought to share with you a little more details about her passion and how she began working with Shieldhill Castle from Sam herself.

How long have you been creating jewellery and what made you want to share it with the world?
I have been designing and making artisan jewellery for 7 years from my home studio here in South Lanarkshire. I’ve spent most of my life in the countryside and have always felt a connection with the wide
open spaces, waterways and woodland. Its where I take all my inspiration from. I just love the natural forms you find when you re out and about.

What makes you want to work with Shieldhill Castle & display your creations within the castle?
I had been looking for somewhere to showcase my work for sometime. I knew what I wanted but didn’t know where to start to be honest. I found Shieldhill completely unintentional. I knew it had been bought
over and that it was being renovated but no idea it was actually open. We stopped to ask directions and we got chatting to Jane at reception. She offered to show us round and I fell in love with it. It felt so
welcoming and as though we were in someone’s home. The staff were so friendly which made it feel even more personal & inviting. As we walked round, Jane explained about what they had planned for the future
and the changes that they had done. The whole time I’m thinking…this is perfect. I asked Jane if she would consider having a cabinet of work and showed her some images. She agreed there and then. Two weeks later we launched the current collection’ ‘Pebbles & Pools’.

What are your favourite pieces you have on display at the castle and why?
Its really hard to choose one. I loved creating this collection but if I had to, I think I would choose ‘Calm Waters’. It was designed to imitate the river Clyde running through the Leadhills. As you travel up through the Leadhills, you pass through gullies as the road meanders through the hills beside the river until you come to a large flat basin. The river slows down through the valley and curves over the rocks to create little pools surrounded by pebbles. Its like chaos chaos chaos and then all of a sudden you come into this beautiful calm area. It like the eye of the storm. Surrounded by hills heather and burns all flowing do to the valley floor.
‘Gold Rush’ is another. It’s design is based on the rivers course but studded with tiny 9ct gold pebbles. It represents the history of the gold that can still be found in the river and surrounding burns. Almost a nod to the time of the panners. Its still very common to see gold panners up there today. I actually have a license myself to pan.

The story of the haunted hotel, Shieldhill Castle

In light of it being the most haunted day of the year, we thought we’d share our very own Shieldhill Castle haunted hotel story with you. Many of you know about the Grey Lady of Shieldhill Castle, but do you know why she haunts the Castle? And do you know that there has been some recent sightings of abnormal activity?

The ‘Grey Lady’ ghost has been sighted by hotel guests in the corridors of Shieldhill Castle. We believe she was the former occupant of the house who fell for someone of a lower social class. The story goes that she killed herself as a result of her father forbidding their relationship. Many guests have said they can feel her presence, with cold touches when they enter what is believed to be her room. Additionally, a male ghost clothed in what appears to be butler’s uniform has been reported in the hotel’s former staff quarters.

Owner of Shieldhill Castle, Colin Frame, has first hand witnessed abnormal activity when appliances would go on automatically in the staff areas, sensor lights being triggered and tickles on the arm. There are several versions of what has happened to the Grey Lady and this mystery man, have you experienced their presence? If so then let us know.

How to plan the ultimate engagement

Want to know how to pull off the perfect engagement in time for Valentine’s Day?

It’s engagement season and  we are so excited for you. What a perfect way to start your new year off on a high note and leap into the new chapter as an engaged couple.

Even with Covid still hindering your “ideal” plans, we can help guide you into making this proposal perfect for you both! Let’s get to it then.

  1. Choose the wedding band (the ring that is most likely to suit and fit your partner)

We are lucky to have the option of going to have some of the best jewellery stores in Edinburgh, Glasgow and across Scotland.Unless your proposal is spontaneous – which is a risky yet still a fun strategy – you should always have the ring to seal the deal at the time of popping the big question, otherwise, it’ll feel a bit like an anti-climax. If you’re worried about getting the ring right, just have a look at the sort of jewellery your partner usually wears and you should get a good idea of their taste. Don’t go for something just because it’s expensive or big, got for something that resembles your love for them in the way you have took your time to think about them whilst buying it.

  1. It’s all about you two

We do love are-make of classic movies, however your partner has probably seen the countless films with wedding proposals that show everything from skywriting, getting down on one knee on an exotic beach, romantic restaurants that are  overpriced. But ultimately, if none of these reflects you as a couple it will feel a bit…uncomfortable and cheesy??. If your other half hates attention for example, suddenly dropping to one knee in the middle of a restaurant will not go down as well as you may hope.So make sure your proposal suits both of you and listen out for key hints from your partner on what not to do. Think about what are the most important elements in your lives? Do you love dogs for example? Then go out a walk and visit a landmark with your partner or a spot you normally go to and let the dog guide you into this big moment!! Or don’t leave the house – home is where the heart is after all – and propose with your morning coffee. Or if your hotel lovers, head out for weekend away and ask the venue to help you, at Shieldhill Castle our team are here for you. It’s all about the two of you after all so don’t be swayed into a proposal that belongs to someone else or in a princess movie.

  1. Don’t over-plan

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail but don’t overdo it. Your proposal should still feel natural and if you over-engineer it, you’re at risk of making it sound a little fake and robotic. Have an idea of what you want to say, for sure, but don’t write down a CV of why you are fit for the role as fiancée.  Speak from the heart and everything else should fall into place.

  1. Choose how to capture it

You will remember this moment for your whole life, but have a think about whether or not you want to capture it another way too. Do you want to hire a photographer or recruit your friends or family as cinematographers? Or you might just be able to hide your phone to capture the moment yourself. You will always have a memory of the moment but you may want to capture it and share the act in action rather than just the aftermath.

  1. Finally!!!! Make sure you’ll get a “Yes”!

At the end of the day you choose how you’re going  to do it, at Shieldhill Castle we’d like to offer you our biggest congratulations for when the happy “Yes!” moment comes. And remember to contact our wedding team to find out more about a hosting your special day at Shieldhill Castle.
